A Rock Feels No Pain

Musical Moods

Original posting date was July 31, 2006

Ever come across a song, that just seems to get into your head, and your heart, and you can’t get it out? Not the kind that drives you nuts, like the awful bubblegum pop from the time you were 14, I don’t mean those.

No, I mean the kind that speaks in a very basic way, and you don’t want to get it out because it expresses an emotion so well?

I do this frequently- probably too much. I love music, and love to connect with it, good and bad. Lately, as I’ve been thinking about the kids, how fast they’re growing, in their own maturity and wisdom, I’ve had a song from Rod Stewart that’s been replaying in my head a lot. I’ve always liked it, but this one just seems so right, right now; this isn’t all of it, but the part that is speaking to me:

And when you finally fly away
Ill be hoping that I served you well
For all the wisdom of a lifetime
No one can ever tell

But whatever road you choose
I’m right behind you, win or lose

From the song Forever Young, of course.

Or, another that’s been replaying with not quite such a cheerful note to it, although there is an underlying hope, or at least the acknowledgement of carrying on after a tragedy, is Eric Clapton’s Tears In Heaven.

DON’T play this one, if, as I am, you are susceptible to musically induced moods! If you’re down at all, and know the story, it’ll wrench. If you’re a glutton for punishment, go see the following story at snopes, while you listen to the song.

A couple of the verses:
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven

Beyond the door
There’s peace I’m sure.
And I know there’ll be no more…
Tears in heaven
